Make a Donation "Mission: Create educational resources to inspire a million people each month." Dear Friends of Densho: Scanning the cable news networks these days leaves me uneasy with the sensationalism, rumors, and hate that I see. I worry that the popularity of these shows could result in a fearful, less informed citizenry. A similar situation existed in early 1942 after the attack at Pearl Harbor and early military victories by the Japanese. Although a few voices called for reason and calm, anti-Japanese news articles, fueled by false rumors and fear, resulted in a tidal wave of calls to remove all people of Japanese ancestry from the West Coast. The injustice, suffering, and cost of this action were immense. Our country rounded up and confined 120,000 innocent people, some for almost 4 years. Japanese Americans suffered huge monetary damages - losing businesses, homes, and wages. And more than any dollar amount, the community endured the shame of being treated like an enemy by their own government. Densho wants our country to never again target as the enemy whole groups of Americans or immigrants because of their race, religion, or country of origin. We can help prevent such an injustice by sharing in a thoughtful, intelligent manner the personal, authentic stories of Japanese Americans who were incarcerated during World War II. By the end of 2010 we will offer over 500 interviews for viewing on the website, the largest online repository of materials about the World War II incarceration of Japanese Americans. The depth, breadth, and variety of these personal experiences, told by people who lived them, can't be denied or rewritten. And by making the testimonies available on the internet, we can reach millions of people. Your support today will keep the stories alive tomorrow. Help us collect new life stories and photos and make these materials widely available to classrooms and the general public via the internet. Please show that you care by making a gift today. With warm regards,
