History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again. -- Maya Angelou, poet and author
Dear Friends of Densho,
Last month I was in Klamath Falls, Oregon, conducting an all-day teacher training workshop when a high school teacher told me about the Maya Angelou quote at the top of this letter. He said the workshop inspired him and reminded him of the quote's challenge: if we face the mistakes of our history with courage and understanding, we do not have to repeat these mistakes.
Ironically, Klamath Falls is only 30 miles from Tule Lake, the former World War II concentration camp where over 25,000 Japanese Americans were incarcerated. Although this former camp site is located in their "backyard," most local teachers and students are unaware of what happened so close to their homes. However, after sharing, discussing, and learning with these 35 committed teachers (on their day off!) about this history and how we can be at our best during times of fear, I was the one who felt inspired and hopeful that positive changes are possible. The Densho workshop gave these teachers the knowledge and tools to share in their classrooms, now we need your help to expand our reach to thousands of others.
It has been an 18-year journey of collecting, learning, and sharing the stories of the World War II Japanese American experience for us to become effective educators. Densho is ready to reach millions of teachers and students from every state in our nation with this piece of American history and its relevance to today's world. To do this, we need resources to recruit, train, and inspire teachers. Earlier this year we were awarded a $200,000 matching grant from the National Park Service to train 1,000 teachers, but we need to raise $100,000 to access these funds. What this means is that for every dollar you donate, another two dollars is made available to us. For example, a $125 dollar donation from you activates another $250 from the National Park Service to directly fund Densho's education program.
Please send a donation to Densho today. The opportunities are ripe to help our country by keeping the Japanese American story alive, but we need you to make this happen. As a thank you gift, we will send you the stunning book, Colors of Confinement, or the powerful DVD, A Flicker in Eternity, with a donation of $125 or more. With a donation of $200 or more we will send you both. Thank you for your support. Together we will work together to inspire a better democracy.
With best regards,
