Introduction
This web-based activity provides students with an opportunity to do research
and to incorporate information presented earlier in the module. Students will design
a memorial commemorating the Japanese American experience during World War II.
They are encouraged to use information or sources found in this module as well
as anything they can find in their own research.
Time
Two to three class periods
Materials
- Handout 6-2a: The National Japanese American Memorial Guidelines (one copy
per student)
Procedure
1. Download and print the PDF file of Activity 6-2 handout. Make copies as indicated
above.
2. Divide the class into groups of four or five students. Distribute handout
6-2a: The National Japanese American Memorial Guidelines, to each student.
Students will need at least one class period to collect information, do research,
and organize their designs.
3. At the beginning of a subsequent class period, announce that the class
will now simulate a national committee convening with the purpose of building
a memorial to recognize the Japanese American experience during World War II.
4. Allow each group to present its design. Allow each group four minutes for
the presentation.
5. Ask the class to vote on its favorite design. Students cannot vote for
their own group's plan.
6. Announce the most popular plan. Display the plans in your classroom.
